What tourists should know about Uber in India - No space for luggage in Uber X Taxi in India . . .

Tourists or businessmen who are traveling in India may wonder about the availability of Uber taxi service in India. The answer is yes! I have just returned to the United States from India and Uber indeed was a great help, considering that I was in India during a time when India was having severe cash problems. My US credit card that was already associated with by Uber aap came in handy as it relieved me from bothering with cash payments for my Uber taxi rides.

Many may not be aware but India happens to be the second largest market for Uber after its success in the United States! Uber taxis are currently in every major city of India. Those who already have the Uber Aap on their phones can continue to use the same Aap and continue to pay as they previously did.

Uber to Indian airports

Planning a trip to the airport to catch a flight from an airport in India? If you have luggage and depend on Uber to get you to the airport, then you may be in for a surprise. I found this the hard way, with a few hours to get to the airport, the Uber X that arrived did not have any space in the car’s trunk to fit two normal size suitcases and the car had no luggage roof rack. Uber cars in India have a large propane tank in the trunk [see photo] and this leaves minimum space for the passenger’s luggage. If going to the airport with luggage make sure you get a car that can take your luggage. If you have luggage, avoid Uber Go or Uber X.

New Uber Hire in India in select cities

A new service called Uber HIRE is an option available in India that allows people to hire a cab for up to 12 hours. This service is available only in select cities such as New Delhi, Bengaluru formerly known as Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, and Pune. Uber Hire does not offer interstate travel. Pricing varies from city to city. Dynamic pricing does not apply to the service.

Using Uber in India – Points to remember

Your credit card probably will continue to be accepted [as longer as your credit card issuing bank allows international use of your card] There is also an option to pay in local cash. If you do not wish to use your credit card abroad change your payment selection on the Uber Aap before requesting a car Uber drivers use the GPS Google map routing. Sometimes it is difficult to find a destination and even if the car appear only two minutes away the time may suddenly change as the driver tries to find the location and makes a wrong turn. The longest I had to wait for Uber car’s to arrive at my location was 20 minutes, the average time for all rides about 10 minutes If for some reason the driver after accepting the call cancels perhaps as he cannot find your location, then you will be charged Rupees 60 [this happened to me once, during my two month stay in India] If you cancel the ride five minutes after requesting an Uber you are charged Rupees 60 for the cancellation. Heres a tip when requesting Uber when you are in busy places such as shopping areas of Karol Bagh in Delhi. Try and walk to an open area before requesting, this will indeed save you time and make it easier for the driver.

Warning when using Uber to go to Airport in Delhi India

Have two or more suitcases? then think twice about taking Uber to Delhi Airport. Uber recommends using the larger Uber X for those with luggage. I did request an Uber X for Delhi airport and the car that showed up did not have space in the trunk for even one standard suitcase, we had four! Read on . . . In Delhi most Uber cars run on CNG gas and do not use diesel or petrol due to environment issues. Every Uber car has a large gas tank installed in their truck which hardly leaves any space for luggage other than small bags. When requesting Uber for airport they should think about allowing an option to at least request a car with a roof rack. [see photo of Uber X car trunk] Uber allows you to book an airport ride well in advance, however they do not guarantee this 100 percent. You still have to depend on how many Uber cars are on the road at a particular time.

Tourists using Uber in India don’t have to worry about being driven around in circles to pad up the taxi meter by unscrupulous taxi cab and scooter taxi drivers. With Uber the chance of this happening is almost nil No need to worry about cash transactions or tipping if paying by credit cards Although some odd security incidents have been reported in India involving single women traveling alone on Uber, these issues can happen anywhere and tourists should be alert and use proper judgment when traveling late at night or in remote areas. All said and done, the two months my wife and I spent in India using Uber was great and had no issues with any of the drivers. Some cars may not be at par with American standards but they were reasonably clean and got us safely to our touring destinations in India.
