Just returned from a two month tour of India - recommendations based on my visit
Planning a holiday in India? Looking to hire a car and driver for your vacation in India? A good driver can make your vacation pleasurable, relaxing and even save you money in the long run by guiding you around the city, that they as locals know. In fact along with a car and driver, you also get a free tourist guide and the price of this comfort is well worth the cost. Finding the right person is however not that easy, especially in a destination where you are visiting for a short period of time. Large companies can advertise and get your business even if they provide questionable service. However, many good people who provide services to tourists cannot afford to advertise; even though they provide excellent service. Travel agents will find you a car and driver at your destination probably at twice the cost and in a majority of cases, even they don’t know who the driver is going to be. This article is a tribute to such people and is based on my recent two month tour of India, where I had the opportunity to visit Cochin, Munnar and Kumarakom in Kerala, Jaipur and Jaisalmer in Rajasthan and Srinagar in Kashmir.Taxi - Car and Driver rental in India:
While tourist have some control, depending on their budget as to the type of taxi or car to hire for their vacation, finding a reliable and good driver is something not that easy. An honest, reliable and knowledgeable driver can make your sightseeing tours enjoyable and worry free. Here are some drivers, who I believe, fall in this category and are mentioned here by the city.Car and driver in Kerala:
The car and driver my wife and I hired for our Kerala vacation, drove us around Kerala from the time of our arrival and stayed with us until our final departure, back to Delhi. We visited Cochin, Munnar and Kumarakom. When you hire a car and driver for the duration of your trip, the driver and car stay at your disposal during the trip, the driver normally sleeps in the car while you are overnight in your hotel. In Kerala our driver was Raneesh. My wife and I found this person to be honest, knowledgeable and an excellent driver. He showed a lot of patience, never complaining regardless of how many times we had him stop to take photographs or for whatever reason. We could leave our belongings in the car without worrying about them. Raneesh is a family man with a two year old kid. My wife and I traveled across miles of desert land with this driver during our visit to Jaisalmer, no car or person was sometimes visible for miles but we felt safe with Jamal, our driver and guide. Jamal owns his own taxi and his prices are quite reasonable. He can even arrange desert tours, desert tent hotels etc. for a fraction of what you can find on the Internet. He seemed to know the areas well and took us to see places that we did not have on our list. On the final day of our visit, after checking out of our hotel in the morning, we left our entire luggage in his car, as we went sightseeing for the rest of the day. We found him to be trustworthy and very reliable. Jamal has a business called Bhaiya Tour & Travels and the business card he gave me says he can arrange in Jaisalmer: Camel & Jeep safari, night stay in desert Swiss tents, as well as any type of car rental. He can probably get you a far better rate on any of these activities than you would find on the Internet or through travel agents. We decided to visit Srinagar despite ongoing reports of problems in parts of Srinagar. It ended up as being a great visit. Our guide and driver during our visit to Srinagar and Pahalgam was Wassim. The photo shown on the right is of his father Abdul Bhai, who owns a tourist taxi business in Srinagar, Kashmir. We met Abdul Bhai when Wassim drove us from Srinagar to Pahalgam. Abdul Bhai also drove us to a point in Pahalgam to see a Hindu temple where the priest is a Muslim. Both Wassim and his father were excellent drivers, We found them to be reliable and knowledgeable about the area and they guided us during our visit to Srinagar. Best of all, In an area where may people are simply hesitant to visit, we felt safe with them. The name of Abdul Bhai's taxi company is Khan Tours and Travels. They offer tourist cars and driver for rent in and around Kashmir. Abdul Bhai also told me that they can even arrange to pick up clients from Jammu railway station and drive them to Srinagar. If you need a reliable car and driver in Kashmir then perhaps you should give Abdul Bhai a call. Since no third parties are involved, you might even end up saving some money! Jaipur, our first driver just made us feel uncomfortable, we then found another car and driver by the name of Sampat Singh, who showed us the city of Jaipur. Sampat Singh owns his own car, we found him to be very reliable and courteous. He knows the city and is a excellent guide cum driver for tourists visiting Jaipur.
