Traveling to Goa by bus is one of the popular options for local Indians as well as foreign tourists from cities such as Mumbai and Pune. There are quite a few bus companies that provide this services. In the Mumbai area, Neeta Travels seems to be the most popular bus service provider. The buses used for inter state transport are of all varieties and the price of tickets depends on the type of bus selected. The bus ride from Mumbai to Goa can take about 13.5 hours on the faster buses. It can take almost 16 hours if you get on a bus that is scheduled to make a lot of stops. The price you pay for a bus to travel from Mumbai to Goa ranges from Rupees 500 per seat to as high as Rupees 1800 per seat depending on what options the bus you are going to travel on will have. Some of the options on these buses are: Air-conditioning Reclining seats Semi-sleeper reclining seats Sleeper bed Television to show movies during trip (normally on day buses The quality of the bus, Volvo buses cost more. Here are some of the current prices for some of the buses running on the Mumbai to Goa route. Cost of a seat (sitting) Mumbai to Goa currently per person for a non air-conditioned bus is from rupees 350 to 500. An air-conditioned bus, with sitting seats and no sleeper seating costs Rupees 600 to Rupees 900. Volvo buses cost the most. An air-conditioned Volvo bus without a sleeper and only sitting seats costs Rupees 1200 where as a for a sleeper seat on a air-conditioned Volvo bus the Mumbai to Goa fare is Rupees 1800. I traveled to Goa by sleeper bus in January 2011 and on the way back to Mumbai, I took the sitting, Volvo bus. I never intend to travel in another sleeper bus in future!. Why you should NOT take a bus from Mumbai to Goa

To start off, while the word sleeper bus sounds comfortable, they are not comfortable in any way. Most sleeper buses leave late at night. The bus is dark, there is no head room and each area is meant for two people. The photo shown here has the partition removed for the photo, what you see on top is for four people to sleep on! There are no washrooms on these buses. They do stop on occasion at some places where you find a washroom, but they are not clean. The bus route is such that you travel thorough winding roads while climbing hills or coming down from hills. These bus drivers drive for long hours and late night driving through such roads is scary! Imagine driving through these roads in the middle of the night on a bus. Its much better to fly or take the train. for a trip from Mumbai to Goa, the best option if you are on a budget is to take the train.
