Tourists quite often feel that since saffron is grown in Srinagar, what they buy here would be pure and cheaper. In Srinagar, saffron is sold just about everywhere, sadly there is a lot of fake saffron sold in Srinagar also. Imagine paying around $7/- for 1 gram of colored corn husk! Fake Saffron

In case you are wondering, what fake saffron is, it could be anything that looks similar to a saffron thread and colored to replicate the real stuff. Corn husk is probably one of the items that falls in this category, it is widely available and is usually free! Corn husk, colored to look like saffron can fool most people, especially tourists who will not realize that they have bought fake saffron until they leave Srinagar and are back home. Sellers of fake saffron know that tourists are easy targets. Fake saffron can be entirely fake or may have a few threads of pure saffron cunningly added to mislead customers.

How to identify fake and pure saffron

Saffron has an aroma and flavor that cannot be duplicated in fake saffron. The only thing that fake saffron makers can copy is the physical likeliness of saffron, so they can fool customers into buying it. They generally add the color real saffron gives out and package it in 1 gram plastic containers.

Testing saffron for purity

If you put a thread of real saffron in your mouth and it feels sweet, then it’s fake! Saffron threads when placed in cold water for a few minutes will color the water and come out still looking like the original saffron thread. If the color washes out and the thread when taken out has faded or completely lost its color, then it’s fake.
