Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple
Dedicated to God Vishnu, the Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple is a famous Hindu
temple located in the city of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala state, South India. The
shrine is currently run by a trust headed by the royal family of Travancore.
The history of Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple dates back to 8th Century. The
abundantly carved seven story mandapam are a fine example of South India
sculpture. The deity is portrayed in a reclining position resting on the holy serpent
Anantha.
Richest Temple in the World
In June 2011, Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple became well known across the globe when news of gold ornaments and jewels said to be worth over
26 billion dollars were discovered in the temples secret chambers vaults in cellars under the temple. It is currently said to be one of the richest
temples in the world.
The idol of Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple is made up of 12008 Saligrama stones that compose the reclining lord. Saligrama stone is said to be
found only at Gandaki River in Nepal.
Temple Festivals
Lakshadeepam Festival:
Lakshadeepam Festival is one of the most popular festivals of the temple. This is a unique festival
where a hundred thousand lamps are lit to decorate the temple. This festival is held once every 6
years, Prior to the Lakshadeepam festival day recitation of three Vedas and chanting of prayers are
done for 56 days. On the festival day, oil lamps are lit in and around the temple buildings.
The previous Lakshadeepam festival is to be held on January 2014.
Navratri Festival
The Navratri festival is held every year during the months of September/October. It is celebrated for
nine days. As part of this festival a processional bringing of the sacred idols of Saraswathi, Durga and
Murukan to the Kuthira Malika palace is done. Kuthira Malika palace is situated in front of the Padmanabha temple.
How to get there
Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple is located in Trivandrum city at a place called East Fort in Thiruvananthapuram. From Trivandrum Airport visitors
have the option to travel by a Local Bus, Auto or Taxi to East Fort. From here you can very easily walk to the temple. Those coming by Train should
get off at the Central Railway Station in Thampanoor, Trivandrum. The temple is only one kilometer from the station. Various modes of
transportation are available. Auto rickshaw is recommended.
