Is Juna Bazaar really worth a visit?
In November 2018 I was in Pune, India and checking out the Internet I found many websites offering travel tips and reviews such as TripAdvisor as well as some local newspapers recommending a must visit to Juna Bazaar in Pune. Intrigued by such reviews I decided to take the time to visit the famous Pune Juna Bazaar market. Juna Bazaar is open only two days a week, Wednesday and Sunday. Many reviews on various travel related websites suggest that this is a good place to find various antique items and centuries old currency etc. I spent about three hours at this place on a Sunday and was quite disappointed at all the hype about this market.Overview
Here are some points of interest for tourists contemplating a visit to Juna Bazaar. For starters this is not an organized market. Juna Bazaar is setup on the side of a busy road where vendor’s setup temporary stalls on the roadside. Mostly I found low quality stuff being peddled by sellers. Most name brand stuff like shoes or jackets were fake and indeed a very poor fake version. Tourists visiting Juna Bazaar should exercise caution when buying old currency in paper format or coins as these may not turn out to be what they think they are! Some people appear to have learnt the art of altering normal metal pieces into rare looking old coins. Tourists are attracted to places like flea markets hoping to find something rare at a cheap price. The vendors at Juna Bazaar or perhaps at most flea markets or street markets these days are no fools and are well aware of prices of antique items. Generally the locals shop here looking for parts of items such as old appliances for which they can no longer get original parts. I saw new Nike shoes here for just Rupees 800 [about 12 dollars] and it goes without saying they were fake Nike shoes.A Picture is worth a thousand words

If you decide to visit Juna Bazaar, it is located on Veer Santaji Ghorpade Road, Kasba Peth, in Pune, Maharashtra. Click Photos to see enlarged view. The photos below show the road and stalls side by side. Actually one lane is temporarily blocked off to traffic on Wednesday and Sunday to provide space for the vendors of Juna Bazaar. The furniture shops you see in the photographs are on the opposite side of the road where Juna Bazaar shops are setup. The shops on the opposite side of the road are permanent shops, most of them selling furniture items.
