I am Question 1. How much money are we
allowed to transfer from India to UK/ USA
in order to buy property?
I am a British Citizen with OCI. Is it limited
to certain amount only yearly. Obviously if
the money is generated by selling property
in India I understand we have to pay capital
gains tax.
Question 2. If there is agricultural property
already on our names, Is it O. K to continue
owning it after taking up British citizenship?
Question 3. If I am inheriting agricultural
property from my parents and am a British
citizen with OCI is that a problem?
Kindly give me email ID of somebody who
can answer the above questions please?
Srinivas Reddy
Transfer of up to USD one million, per
financial year is generally allowed. As a
British citizen you can inherit property
located in India. Whether it is agricultural
property or any other type of property
makes no difference.
I’m sorry I make it a point not to refer
anyone. unless I truly have dealt with them.
You will have to do your own research to
find someone to deal with. Perhaps you
could Google chartered accountants or tax
lawyers who may be able to guide you. Also
your bank may be able to offer you some
assistance or recommend someone who
could help you.
If you don't have time for all these
questions I understand. We fly into Delhi
January 23 and out February 23.
My wife and I plan to visit the Rajasthan
area Jan 23 to Feb 6th approximately and I
think I have found a car and driver that will
arrange the hotels and tour of that area.
I would also like to do something similar for
two weeks in South India where we have a
car and driver and maybe we arrange the
hotels. Areas such as Goa and Hampi and
Kerala and Mysore. I see you gave a couple
of examples with phone numbers. How
does one find a car a driver on the web?
Are you able to recommend a good
itinerary for two weeks in South India. We
are in our 50s and enjoy culture and sights
and people. Not wanting to just lay on a
beach or to party.
One more thing. If we wish to book a train
could we wait until we arrive or should we
reserve as soon as possible.
Thank you. nice web site you have.

B.C. Canada
Its good to hear from Canadians, My wife
and I have just returned from a three
month trip in India. We spend quite a bit of
time in Vancouver and Seattle and
generally visit India once a year. The
benefits of early retirement!
Regarding your question “How does one
find a car a driver on the web?”
All I can say is that some research is
required to ensure that you are dealing
with reliable people. This is easier said than
done, especially for tourists trying to hire
drivers on the other side of the world.
However safety should be a concern for
tourists not only when they travel to India
but to any part of the world.
I do have an advantage as far as India is
concerned because I was born in India and
moved to Canada in 1970. I make frequent
trips to India. The car/drivers I use on my
trip when visiting a new city always are
initially hired through proper channels such
as a reputed travel agency or hotel. If they
turn out to be good, I then have the option
of contacting them directly and they need
not pay a commission to hotels etc.
The examples I have posted on the website
about car and drivers are the names and
numbers of drivers we used on our trip to
India in October 2013. We visited Jaipur,
Jaisalmer in the state of Rajasthan, Cochin,
Munnar and Kumarakom in Kerala and
Srinagar in Kashmir. We found all of them
to be honest and trust worthy and posted
their phone numbers in an effort to help
them get business. Some of these drivers
often own their own vehicle but get clients
through travel agencies, hotels etc. They
don’t have the money to advertise and end
up paying almost paying up to 50% of their
earnings to the source through which they
get customers. Posting their contact
information was my way of saying thanks
to them.
My suggestion to all tourists visiting India
would be to find car and drivers through a
reputed company first and if they are
satisfied with the service then contact them
directly the next time. Car and driver
rentals arranged by the hotel where
tourists are staying is also a safe bet. I
would be very cautious of arranging a
car/driver from the web without any
recommendations.
Goa is actually not considered to be in
South India but is considered to be South
Western part of India. Kerala, Mysore,
Hampi and Goa are doable in the two
weeks. Use the net to come up with an
itinerary that is in line with your
preferences and budget.
Good luck with your trip and when you
return, if you have any suggestions, tips or
photo’s you would like to share with visitors
of Travel India Smart, I will be glad to post
them.
